The Workshop and the Tutor
Chris Blake specializes in using colour and tone to produce vibrant and exciting landscapes, marinescapes and streetscapes. The colours and tones he selects are placed to enhance the natural atmospheric light in a scene so that sunsets, stormy days, bright mornings or quiet and still days are portrayed with life and character.
In all his art works, Chris tells a story. He often includes active figures - not detailed, but loose and impressionistic figures which draw the viewer's imagination into the scene and the story. He loves the big picture, the shapes and feelings evoked by a scene. His aim is to teach his students to see that big picture. rather than nitty gritty details.

Chris brings humour into his classes as he demonstrates and explains techniques in perspective, composition and tonal values. However, he rarely finishes his demonstration pieces as his emphasis is on student development. His hands-on approach with plenty of individual help and instruction is aimed at inspiring and helping students achieve what they want in their art. In class, he uses photographs as references, but, weather permitting, he envisages also painting in the field.
